General Standards

Use of Colour

  • Colour should be used sparingly and generally maps and models should be drawn in black and white only. This will aid simplicity and reduce coloured toner usage. If colour is used then a key should be provided.

Level 0

  • Should illustrate the functional view of an organisation and generally be read top down. E.g. highest authority at the top, lowest level at the bottom.

Level 1

  • Should generally be drawn horizontally, left to right.
  • Dependency is indicated by the direction of arrows between each process.

Level 2

  • Should generally be drawn horizontally, left to right.
  • Where we have a decision the general rule is that a “positive” (Yes) outcome flows horizontally (usually to the right) and “negative” (no) outcome flows vertically (usually downwards).
  • Flow to be indicated by the direction of arrows.
  • Process information and metrics should be added using notation boxes. Process information should also be summarised on the PAD document.
  • Non-standard shapes should not be used unless required, if this is the case then a key must be provided.
  • Untrained users are not expected to draw models using the enhanced shapes, however they may be required to understand them.

Level 3

  • The task analysis template should be used wherever possible however particularly complex tasks may require modelling to aid understanding and analysis.
  • If this is so, then only 1 actor should appear on the model and level 2 standards should be followed.
